Yankee Candle Semi-annual Sale Summer 2017

After a few years of uncertainty, I decided to give Yankee Candle another shot. I wasn’t getting much throw out of the large jar candles, wax tarts, or votives that I was buying, so I pulled back and resisted their products. The company addressed these concerns in a Facebook Live video last year, and had unsatisfied customers contact a designated “We Listen” e-mail about hard-to-smell products. Yankee Candle has since released new scents, as well as entirely changing the look of their brand. I was due to see how the company responded to customer feedback, and thus, my semi-annual sale order was placed.

I ordered six large jars for $60 along with free shipping. I picked three fragrances in the classic large jar, and three in large two-wick tumblers. At least three of the scents are new. It will take some time to compare and contrast these fragrances, but for now, my initial thoughts are overwhelmingly positive. They seem like strong scented candles, and my expectations are not as low as they were a year ago.

First Impressions (all cold sniff!)

YCs01

Ocean Star – Better than I expected! I could see this being a very refreshing, unisex body care scent. Out of all the aquatic-type scents available, I’m glad I chose this one.

Pumpkin Buttercream – True to its title, but deepened with a lovely clove note. I think I may have to do a “pumpkin cake showdown” with other candles that are similarly themed.

French Countryside – Not as floral as I expected, but more like a soft spring and summer perfume. I’m really loving this candle, but I’m a seasonal burner… I may wait all the way until next spring to light it.

YCs02

Peeps – This smells like a delicious vanilla and marshmallow cupcake to me. I was expecting it to be a little more… candy-ish? I’ve never sniffed the Marshmallow Chicks Yankee candle with yellow wax, so I can’t compare the two.

Stars & Stripes – Really, this candle makes me think of a craft store, but during spring and summer months. To be honest, I bought it for the label – I really wanted a festive 4th of July candle.

Island Waterfall – The scent reminds me of a cleaning product, but in a good way. I think this would be a great neutral fragrance to burn around a lot of company.

…and I only bought a single wax tart. I kept putting a Vanilla Lime large jar candle in my cart, but decided I wanted to test it with a tart first. I know this one isn’t new, but it’s new to me! Oddly enough, on cold sniff, I feel like I’m getting mint from this fragrance.

Bath & Body Works Semi-annual Sale Summer 2017

I had to create a new Instagram account last weekend. Follow me @angela.mally for extra wax & candle posts 🙂

This is most of the damage that I did during the Bath & Body Works semi-annual sale for summer 2017, and its not a lot of stuff considering it has lasted all month. I am not much of a spring/summer person, so I haven’t been all that interested in the current collections. Fall and winter collections are another story… Still, I can usually find a few items that I like once the sale begins, and some things did stick out after shopping this year.

Truthfully, it was the candles that forced my hand when I submitted my orders online. I bought Paris Café for $10, along with four Tutti Dolci items and the Bourbon Strawberry Vanilla lotion that were 75% off. About a week later, the Paris/French collection went 75% off, so I picked four of those and bought the Berry Waffle Cone candle for $11. I also used a 20% off coupon code for both orders. I’ve had a difficult time trying to order the Berry Waffle Cone candle online, as it went out of stock almost daily. It is clearly a popular 3-wick.

My first impressions on some of these products: Paris Café is a very strong coffee fragrance, and to me, smells like a french vanilla cappuccino. I agree with the people that said Berry Waffle Cone smells like apple pie, and that White Mocha Kiss smells an awful lot like Beach Nights: Summer Marshmallow from last summer. The rest of the scents are originals to me. This is how the Bath & Body Works website describes each of these products:

Paris Café – Rich roasted coffee, sugared brioche, vanilla crème

Berry Waffle Cone – Sweet summer berries, golden waffle cone, creamy vanilla

Pink Peony Cremé – Blushing peony blossom, pink currant, & white amber dipped in nectar

White Mocha Kiss – Rich vanilla mocha & coconut orchid wrapped in marshmallow crème

French Riviera – Seaside citrus, jasmine water, amber musk, summer fig, driftwood

Bonjour Paris – Pink sugarcane, whipped marshmallow, candied orange blossom, white honeysuckle, fluffy amber

(Not pictured, it went straight into my purse!)
Bourbon Strawberry Vanilla – Bourbon vanilla, garden strawberry, & apricot nectar

Most of these scents are true to their titles and descriptions, except that I don’t really get as much sweetness out of Bonjour Paris as I expected. Another thing that I didn’t expect was enjoying Pink Peony Cremé as much as I do, because judging by its description, I figured I already had enough body care scents just like it.

Who has been shopping the B&BW semi-annual sale this month, and which candle & body care scents have you collected?

Goose Creek: Blueberry Cheesecake

GCBC

I received this 24 ounce Blueberry Cheesecake large jar candle from Goose Creek. These large jar candles retail for $27.99, and this fragrance comes in other forms, such as wax melts, plug-ins, room sprays, tea lights, votives, centerpiece candles, folk art jars, and medium jars. This blueberry candle is currently on sale at the time of this post!

My first impression of Blueberry Cheesecake, on cold sniff, was that I picked up on a strong, sweet blueberry note that made me very happy. I love blueberry fragrances and the scent appeal of this candle is 5 out of 5 stars for me. As I continued to smell the candle cold, I did pick up on a cheesecake or cream cheese note. It isn’t overpowering at all, but it is a nice, subtle companion to the blueberry. When the candle is lit, I get about the same ratio of blueberry to cheesecake as I did on cold. I don’t get any bakery or vanilla notes in this fragrance, like many other foodie or dessert candles contain. The scent and throw of the candle is medium-strong, but not so strong that it would kick anyone out of the room. I could smell Blueberry Cheesecake in the other rooms and halls of my home as it was burning, and the scent lingered well after extinguishing the flames.

GCBC2

What I love most about the Blueberry Cheesecake candle is that it performs really well each time I burn it. The two wicks help the melted wax pool out evenly, so I don’t have to deal with issues like tunneling, and I get a clean burn each time I light it with no sooting as well. It is a win-win: the wax pools out quickly enough that I can start smelling the scent soon after the candle is lit, but it does not burn too quickly, so I can keep the candle lit for a while without worrying about burning through too much of the product.

I’m very happy about adding another well done blueberry scent to my collection. I would recommend this candle to anyone that enjoys sweet, fruity scents, especially berry desserts. Although I would mainly burn Blueberry Cheesecake during the spring and summer months, this is also a candle that I would reach for any time of the year.

Bath & Body Works: Cactus Blossom

CBC

Cactus Blossom is a 14.5 ounce 3-wick candle from Bath & Body Works and White Barn that retails for $24.50 in stores and online. This scent is also available in other forms, such as wallflowers, room perfumes, and smaller sized candles. The scent notes included in its description include cactus flower, coconut, vanilla, and lemon.

When I smelled Cactus Blossom in the store for the first time, I immediately noticed similarities to the Bath & Body Works scent Endless Weekend, which I love. I’m not sure if this is a repackage of Endless Weekend, but it can probably pass as a “dupe” for the scent. I don’t really detect the coconut note strongly in Cactus Blossom. I do get floral, but not the typical musky, classic floral notes I’ve come to expect in scented products. It is a light scent with hints of fruit; it is almost candy-like due to the vanilla and lemon, but more on the fresh, perfume-y side overall.

The scent strength and throw for Cactus Blossom is about an 8. The best thing about this candle is that I can smell it around the house shortly after I light it. I love having this candle for its unique and seasonally-appropriate scent, but I’m mostly pleased with its performance. I have relied on it all spring long to quickly freshen up a room any time, for any occasion. It has never received any complaints. Would I recommend purchasing this candle? Absolutely!
